Thriller-flick junkies, here's one for you.
Inspired by a true story, The Strangers shines the spotlight on Liv Tyler (Kristen) and Scott Speedman (James) as a young couple in the midst of a relationship crisis. After attending a friend's wedding, they're up in James' parent's home that sits in the middle of nowhere. While trying to deal with their broken state, a strange young woman comes knocking on their door at 4am, looking for someone who doesn't live there.
Her presence marks the beginning of sheer terror for the couple.
While the film might seem rather plot-less to some, first-time writer/director Bryan Bertino does a pretty good job capturing the horrifying and tense atmosphere of a home being invaded by psychopaths, having those around me at the edge of their seats and hiding under their jackets once all hell broke loose.
Despite some genuinely frightening scenes and eerie sound effects, the film does have its flaws, which in this case, is in the extremely limited dialogue, implausible actions of the characters, random scene cuts and sheer plain stupidity.
In short, while the movie does a decent job of creating a tense atmosphere, it also scores points in enveloping you with confusion. Of course, we could take into account that all facts of the story are not entirely known, but we'll leave that to your own discretion.
One thing's for sure though, after watching this, I'm very glad to be living where I am now.
